The Sheriff of Nottingham pelted with vegetables!

Peter Finch as the Sheriff of Nottingham

After all these years, I still occasionally discover fabulous unseen stills from Walt Disney's Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men (1952). Above is a fine example. It shows Peter Finch as the Sheriff of Nottingham being pelted with vegetables by the townsfolk in the market square. This was after Scathelock is rescued by Robin Hood and his men.

Above and below are some enlarged sections from the same image, showing the detail of art director Carmen Dillon's fabulous set at Denham Studios in Buckinghamshire, England.

If you have any stills from the film we have never seen before, please get in touch.

These outside sets by Carmen Dillon are very impressive and they were of course enhanced by Peter Ellenshaw's matte additions. We can see above the set in these pictures the trees around Denham where this was filmed. A year or two ago we were contacted by Alex Bryce's daughter who had been around a great deal while this filming was going during that hot summer. Must have been very exciting because they would have known that this was a big film as opposed to the scale of the films we were producing here at the time. In fact this was the most expensive film to have been made in England up to that point. These are impressive scenes from the film.

I was particularly impressed by the last image that shows what appears to be two people on the steps of the building over-looking the market place. The still also shows in fine detail the faces of many of the extras who appeared as 'Nottingham townsfolk' in the market square . It would have been wonderful to have heard the memories of some of those people who appeared as extras during the filming at Denham. At least Alex Bryce's daughter gave us a very vivid account of those magical times.
